The European Feed Manufacturers' Federation (FEFAC) was founded in 1959 by five national compound feed associations from France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.

FEFAC membership today consists of national associations from EU Member States as full members and of an increasing number of observer members from non-EU countries. FEFAC is the only independent spokesman of the European Compound Feed Industry at the level of the European Institutions. FEFAC holds observer status in CODEX Alimentarius.

The European Commission published EU Feed protein balance sheet 2017/2018

On 20 May 2019, the EC published the updated EU Feed Protein Balance sheet which includes data on roughage for the first time. The EU Feed Protein Balance provides a comprehensive overview of EU feed supply. Looking at the total EU use of feed consumption, about 80% of the feed is from EU origin. Roughage, such as grass and silage maize, is the main source of feed protein, representing 45% of EU total feed use, ahead of oilseed meals (26%) and cereals (24%) (tbc).» read more

FEFAC releases its publication on the feed industry’s use of co-products

On 3 June 2019, FEFAC released its publication called “Co-products, an essential part of animal nutrition”, which aims to create increased awareness among EU stakeholders and policy makers about the feed industry’s extensive use of co-products. The publication describes how co-products such as brewers’ grains, sugar beet pulp and wheat bran are generated during food and biofuel production, as well as what their value is in compound feed. The use of co-products is an illustration of the role European compound feed manufacturers play in the food chain’s circular economy, creating economic and environmental benefits for both the original production process and the livestock sector.» read more

Recommendation Biosecurity

The focus of this document is on biosecurity measures for the operations of sourcing of feed ingredients, transport, storage, manufacturing and delivery of final feed to farms. It also covers visits to farms of feed company personnel. These recommendations are primarily meant for operators based in countries where there is no detailed professional/legal guidance yet for the drafting and implementation of biosecurity plans at feed mill levels. They must be considered in the light of national guidance and/or legal requirements where relevant.

Code of good practice for the labelling of compound feed for food producing animals

This Code of Practice developed jointly by Copa-Cogeca and FEFAC in accordance with article 25 of Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 was endorsed by the EU Commission in accordance with article 26 of the same Regulation, i.e. after consultation of stakeholders and national control authorities. It provides producers of compound feed with practical recommendations on how to label compound feed in accordance with the provisions laid down in Regulation (EC) No 767/2009 on the placing on the market and use of feed. It also enables farmers to better understand labeling particulars and better assess the nutrition value of a compound feed thus contributing to informed choice. It includes in particular a section on claims (permitted claims, justification of claims). This Code will be updated regularly.
