A lot has already been said about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), published in September 2015, but I believe it is time for the EU livestock sector to fully embrace these ambitious targets of great societal importance. BLOG - Time to recognise the role of animal nutrition science in boosting disease resistance in farm animals

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest threats to society. A world where antibiotics are no longer able to cure human beings from currently considered non-lethal diseases is nothing less than a disaster scenario. Livestock farmers are asked to play their part by reducing the use of antibiotics while maintaining animal health and welfare. Step one would, therefore, be to provide farm animals with means to be able to better resist to pathogens in the first place and reduce the need for antibiotic treatment. This can be established through innovative animal nutrition strategies.» read more

With approximately 25 participants we had a good discussion on what sustainability means for the feed industry and explored the priorities and challenges of Central and Eastern Europe for the development of sustainable feed and livestock production systems.» read more

BLOG - Tackling climate change through animal feed

Livestock farming has a significant impact on the environment, while it also provides societal benefits through nutritional food and environmental services. It is clear though that in Europe the 10% share of total GHG emissions lies well below the global average. Nevertheless, many ‘anti-livestock’ environmentalists today still quote the 10 year-old FAO report “Livestock’s Long Shadow” which claimed that farm animals globally are responsible for 18% of the total GHG emissions. In 2013, the FAO already brought its estimation down to 14.5% in a report called “Tackling climate change through livestock”. Most importantly, this report stressed that improved productivity and animal performance through better quality and more resource efficient feed are the key emission mitigation strategies that help with tackling climate change. In the aftermath of the ambitious commitments made at COP21 in Paris, I proudly announce that our innovation driven compound feed manufacturing industry is ready to provide solutions.» read more

BLOG - The Search for Alternative Protein Sources

When it comes to producing feed for food-producing animals, sourcing proteins is by far the biggest sustainability challenge. The feed industry continuously explores potential alternative protein sources, always with feed safety as the primary requisite that needs to be complied with. In the margins of EXPO Milano, FEFAC organised a workshop on alternative protein sources on 9 October 2015, together with its Italian feed industry member association ASSALZOO. About 130 participants, including experts from EFSA, the European Commission and supply chain partners, discussed the viability of alternative feed protein sources such as insects, algae, protein sources of vegetable and marine origin and single cell protein like yeasts, with a specific focus on their risk assessment and management.» read more

BLOG - Presenting the Feed Safety Management Vision to EU Commissioner Andriukaitis

On 29 September 2015, FEFAC organised, together with our Belgian member BEMEFA, and the Belgian competent authorities (FAVV – The Belgian Food Safety Agency), a field visit for the European Commissioner of Health & Food Safety, Mr Vytenis Andriukaitis. Feed safety management and traceability was the theme of a day that started at the impressive 650.000 tonnes storage facility for feed grains of Euro-Silo in Ghent, was followed up with a visit to the state-of-the-art factory of the compound feed manufacturer Vanden Avenne and ended at a modern pig breeding farm in Ooigem.» read more

BLOG - Soy Sourcing Guidelines as Bridge Builder

With the 1st version of the FEFAC Soy Sourcing Guidelines published on 11 August 2015, it is now up to the owners of responsible soy programmes to verify their compliance with the Guidelines using the online benchmarking tool, which was launched on 14 September. In the week of 7 September, I spent a whole week in Argentina and Brazil, on behalf of FEFAC, to talk with our key partners in the soy supply chain, as well as governmental representatives, with our Soy Sourcing Guidelines as the starting point of the discussion. » read more
