FEFAC releases its publication on the feed industry’s use of co-products

On 3 June 2019, FEFAC released its publication called “Co-products, an essential part of animal nutrition”, which aims to create increased awareness among EU stakeholders and policy makers about the feed industry’s extensive use of co-products. The publication describes how co-products such as brewers’ grains, sugar beet pulp and wheat bran are generated during food and biofuel production, as well as what their value is in compound feed. The use of co-products is an illustration of the role European compound feed manufacturers play in the food chain’s circular economy, creating economic and environmental benefits for both the original production process and the livestock sector.» read more

Following its launch on 23rd April 2018, the EU Code of Conduct on Agricultural Data Sharing has received the support of two additional international federations: Centre de Liaison International des Marchands de Machines Agricoles et des Reperateurs (CLIMMAR) and AnimalhealthEurope. One year after its release, the EU Code of Conduct on Agricultural Data Sharing has been accepted and signed by over ten key European agricultural sector organisations. All signatories are convinced of the importance of setting transparent principles and guidelines to support the development of digital farming, which demonstrates the need for increased data sharing in agriculture.» read more

Dietetic Copper preserved as a solution in pig nutrition and support health management

On 23 July 2018, the revised maximum permitted levels of copper in complete feeds were published in the Official Journal of the European Union. In line with EFSA’s recommendations for soil protection, the maximum levels were lowered to 25 mg/kg for all ages of pigs, but the political agreement allows permitted levels of 150 mg/kg up to four weeks after weaning and 100 mg/kg up to eight weeks after weaning. This ensures feed manufacturers can incorporate adequate levels of copper for piglets to support their nutrition and good health in the most sensitive period of their life, while minimizing the impact on the environment.» read more

We share the objective of an increased production of soy in Europe. According to the protein balance sheet developed by the European Commission, with input from COCERAL, FEDIOL, FEFAC and several other stakeholders, Europe produces already important amounts of protein, but there is a clear deficit of protein-rich crops and feed material. Out of the 31,2 million tons of protein-rich soybean meal used for feed in Europe in 2015/2016, 1,5 million were produced from EU grown soybeans .» read more

Global Feed LCA Institute provides PEF with free database

Together with its sister organisations in the United States (AFIA) and Canada (ANAC) as well as the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF), FEFAC has launched the Global Feed LCA Institute (GFLI). The GFLI aims to provide a freely accessible, transparent LCA (life cycle assessment) database of feed ingredients. This will allow for globally harmonised assessments and benchmarking of environmental footprint calculations of feed manufacturing.
